Trump-Backed American Bitcoin Falls as Crypto Stocks Rally
Shares of American Bitcoin Corp., co-founded by Eric Trump and majority-owned by Hut 8, fell 5.73% to $8.00 on August 21 as the broader crypto market rallied.
The decline is notable because other crypto stocks like Coinbase and Robinhood rose significantly on the same day, with Robinhood up 12.4% and Coinbase gaining 9.5%. Bitcoin itself traded near $77,500 after touching $79,426, extending a rally that has been supported by the Treasury Department's expanded bond-buyback program and a weaker dollar.
The price drop in ABTC can be attributed to profit-taking following its rapid two-day advance of 22%, as well as company-specific equity risks such as its reliance on stock issuance to fund its accumulation strategy. The company has an at-the-market (ATM) program that allows it to sell up to $2.1 billion of Class A shares, which has contributed to a significant increase in share dilution.
