Trump Claims Iran Requests Talks on Nuclear Program and Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump announced on August 2 that Iran had requested talks with the United States, which would focus on the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program. Trump claimed that Gulf allies, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, had encouraged Iran to seek dialogue.

The proposed negotiations were reportedly a factor in his decision to postpone a planned military strike against Iran, which was set to take place immediately.

Tehran quickly disputed Trump's account, with Iranian officials stating on August 3 that no talks were scheduled and that they would only negotiate through Oman. The US president described the Iranian leadership as 'unbelievably duplicitous'.

The development comes after the June 17 signing of the Islamabad Memorandum, a document aimed at creating a framework for ending ongoing conflicts and facilitating broader diplomatic engagement.
