Trump Could Reap Millions from Crypto Bill Divestiture Plan
The proposed crypto Bill in the US Congress has a surprise provision that could benefit President Donald Trump financially. The bipartisan ethics proposal suggests that the president divest from crypto-related businesses, which would allow him to defer capital gains taxes on his holdings.
The tax deferral could be worth millions for Trump, who reported earning $1.4 billion in 2025 from crypto and memecoin ventures. If he holds new investments until death, the capital gains would go untaxed. Without this provision, Trump could face a 20% capital gains tax on the difference between what he paid for an asset and its selling price.
The proposal, hashed out by Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona, also includes a requirement for state attorneys general to enforce ethics measures if the Justice Department declines to do so. This provision is central to unlocking a bipartisan deal to pass the long-stalled Clarity Act.
