Trump Family Exemption Sparks Debate Over Crypto Regulation Bill
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (H.R. 3633) is nearing a crucial vote in the Senate on September 15, and its fate hangs in the balance. The bill aims to provide clarity for the crypto industry, but it's being held up by contentious ethics language that has sparked debate among lawmakers.
According to the latest draft of the bill, the president, vice president, members of Congress, federal officials, and their spouses would be barred from issuing or sponsoring digital assets while in office. However, this provision does not extend to the children of public officials, leaving Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump outside the core restriction.
World Liberty Financial, the family's crypto venture, has been a source of controversy, with Reuters reporting that the family disclosed over $1.4 billion in income from crypto ventures last year, including nearly $800 million from World Liberty Financial. This has raised questions about the ethics of the bill and whether it provides sufficient protections for consumers.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has been a strong advocate for the bill, saying that clarity is coming either through the Senate vote or new rules from regulatory agencies. However, some lawmakers have expressed concerns about the bill's language on stablecoin yields, warning that weak guardrails could lead to deposit substitutes.
