Trump Holdings Hold Up Bipartisan Crypto Regulation Bill
The bipartisan Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the Clarity Act, has been stuck in limbo due to a contentious issue surrounding President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency holdings. The bill aims to establish a federal framework for regulating the crypto industry, but Democrats are blocking its passage until it addresses Trump's involvement.
Trump made over $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency-related income in 2025, with $500 million coming from World Liberty Financial and another $635 million connected to his meme coin, $TRUMP. The Democrats argue that the bill falls short on ethics provisions, as it would allow Trump to keep his crypto assets without divesting. They want language added to force him to divest and allow him to cash out without paying capital gains.
Republicans counter that the current bill already includes an ethics provision that exceeds what any previous president has agreed to. However, Democrats remain unconvinced, pointing to Trump's significant financial stake in the industry as a reason for stronger regulations. The Senate is now expected to leave for recess without voting on the bill.
