Trump Media Exits Crypto.com Deal Amid Crowded Digital Asset Market
Trump Media Group has confirmed that it is exiting its plans to build a publicly traded treasury company around Crypto.com's CRO token, according to an SEC disclosure filed on August 10. The company had planned to use the Cronos blockchain to accumulate and stake CRO tokens as part of a business combination agreement with Yorkville Acquisition Corp.
The decision to abandon this plan was made by Interim CEO Kevin McGurn, who stated that the digital asset treasury market has become increasingly crowded. He also noted that staking 'has become less important for Crypto.com' and that the prediction market business had grown too crowded to justify further investment.
In addition to exiting its plans with Crypto.com, Trump Media Group has also scaled back a planned prediction-market integration into Truth Social, opting instead for a marketing partnership. The company has already booked $318 million in realized losses on coins sold at an average price of $74,855 against its purchase price, plus $237 million in unrealized losses on what remains.
Trump Media Group's bitcoin stash has fallen to about 4,261 BTC, down from a peak of 11,542 BTC bought for $1.37 billion. The company is redirecting its focus toward its pending merger with TAE Technologies, a fusion energy company it agreed to combine with in a $6 billion deal announced in December.
