Trump Paves Way for Next Major Overhaul of US Financial System
Former US President Donald Trump has signaled that he is paving the way for another significant overhaul of America's financial system. The latest development follows a long line of major changes in the country's monetary policy, which began with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Washington laid the foundation for the nation's financial structure when he signed the charter for the First Bank of the United States in 1791. This marked the first truly national bank in the young republic, introducing a credit system and monetary structure that would serve as the backbone of the country's economy.
Lincoln built upon this foundation during the Civil War by re-establishing the gold standard with the Greenback and passing the National Banking Acts between 1863-1864. These measures brought forth a unified national currency, a system of federally chartered banks, and transferred power over money creation to Washington.
Now, Trump is following in their footsteps. His policy record matches up with this image, having signed executive orders since January 2025 that declare the US as the world's leading cryptocurrency nation, created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, prohibited any U.S. CBDC, advanced the GENIUS Act (the first federal stablecoin law requiring 100% reserves to be held in cash/Treasuries), opened up custody and tokenization of assets for banks, and brought clarity to market structures so that digital assets can sit within the traditional financial system rather than outside.
According to @LordBelgrave, a renowned City of London banker, this is not new. He posted an image months ago highlighting this very same poster, indicating that American monetary structure is being rewritten once again.
