Trump Pushes for Clarity Act to Regulate Cryptocurrency Industry
President Donald Trump met with crypto industry leaders and regulators at the White House on Wednesday to promote the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at establishing clear rules for the cryptocurrency industry. The legislation would provide consumer protections and help prevent 'pump-and-dump' schemes where investors are manipulated into buying and selling cryptocurrencies.
The Clarity Act has stalled in the Senate due to partisan ethics provisions, but Trump expressed his support for the bill, stating it would make the administration's progress on cryptocurrency regulation durable. He also emphasized that passing the bill would keep the US ahead of China and open the door to new innovations.
Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have opposed the bill due to concerns about presidential conflicts of interest. Trump's involvement with various crypto ventures has raised alarms among his critics, with some suggesting it may be illegal. The SEC has proposed a new Crypto Assets Rule that would allow crypto entrepreneurs to raise capital in the US with digital assets.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission will hold its inaugural meeting of an innovation advisory committee on Thursday to share details about its plans to regulate the industry. CRTC Chairman Michael Selig emphasized the importance of regulatory clarity, stating it creates confidence and attracts investment, leading to job creation and market growth.
