Trump Regulators Fill Crypto Policy Void Amid Stalled Legislation
President Donald Trump's regulators are stepping in to fill the void left by stalled US crypto legislation, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) set to write favorable rules for the digital asset industry.
Despite efforts from deep-pocketed crypto companies, which have spent hundreds of millions of dollars over several years campaigning for legislation they say will put them on solid legal ground, lawmakers are unable to reach a deal before the new Congress next year.
The SEC is expected to advance a rule exempting certain token offerings from securities rules in the coming weeks, while the CFTC will discuss crypto regulation at an industry gathering this week.
However, only Congress can create a lasting framework for the industry, and experts warn that regulations will be vulnerable to the shifting political climate and court challenges without legislation.
