Trump Relents on Crypto Ethics Provisions Amid Bipartisan Push
President Donald Trump has agreed to a significant portion of a stringent ethics proposal in the broader cryptocurrency legislation headed for a key vote this week, according to three main Republican authors.
The initial bill had only one provision that would bar federally elected officials and their spouses, as well as federal judges, from issuing digital assets.
A core group of Democrats and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., argued the proposal didn't go far enough to address conflict-of-interest issues with Trump's crypto wealth.
Tillis and other Democrats demanded language allowing state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law, not just the Justice Department.
Trump has agreed to include a 'meaningful role' for state attorneys general in enforcing the measure, according to Republican Sens. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Scott of South Carolina, and John Boozman of Arkansas.
