Trump Says AI Could Be 'Bigger Than the Internet' Amid Calls for Light-Touch Regulation
US President Donald Trump has reiterated his support for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development, calling it 'bigger than the internet' and urging regulators to adopt a light-touch approach. Speaking at a White House gathering with crypto executives and financial regulators, Trump emphasized the need for regulation that does not stifle industry growth.
Trump highlighted the importance of AI in maintaining US leadership over China, which he said is the closest competitor in this field. He also touted efforts to let AI companies build their own power plants to supply their data centers, rather than relying on the existing electrical grid. This approach would allow for brand-new power generation and minimize strain on the grid.
Trump acknowledged that the industry could use 'a little public relations help' due to growing opposition from communities concerned about electricity costs, water use, and environmental impacts. At least 37 people have been arrested during data center protests this year, while lawmakers in 15 states have considered moratoriums on data center development.
