Trump Slams Tariffs on Over 60 Countries, Including Canada
President Trump has introduced sweeping new import duties on goods from over 60 countries, covering nearly all US imports. The tariffs range from 10% to 12.5%, with significant product exemptions built in. This move comes after a temporary global tariff expired on July 24.
The administration also signed an executive order imposing 50% tariffs on 554 Canadian products, effective August 19. These targeted goods include dairy products, electronic equipment, and machinery, as well as hockey equipment.
The new tariff architecture is based on Sections 338 and 301 of the Tariff Act, which provide alternative pathways to impose import duties. This pivot is notable because it's similar to the legal framework used during the first Trump administration's trade war with China. The Section 301 provisions alone are projected to generate $581 billion in revenue between 2026 and 2036.
