Trump Ties Crypto Regulation to Family's Billions
President Donald Trump is playing a key role in drafting cryptocurrency regulations, despite his family's significant profits from the industry. According to financial disclosures, Trump made nearly $1.5 billion from cryptocurrency last year, including $635 million from his Trump Meme Coin, which has lost 80% of its value over the past year.
The president has repeatedly denied any personal involvement in his family's businesses, but critics argue that his actions raise concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter stated that while Trump's actions are not technically illegal, they do present a serious financial conflict of interest for the president to hold substantial investments in an industry he is overseeing.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe it is inappropriate for the president and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while he is in office. Even among Republicans, three out of ten respondents shared this view.
