Trump Unleashes 50% Tariff Blow on Canada's Auto Sector
US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose a 50% tariff on all cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel imported from Canada, starting January 1, 2027. The move is part of an escalation in the trade fight between the two countries.
The President justified the decision by accusing Canada of unfair trade practices, including steep Canadian tariffs on American farmers and farm products. He claimed these barriers had made business 'impossible' for US agricultural producers and contributed to a roughly $60 billion trade deficit between the two countries.
Trump framed the tariff increase as an incentive for companies to manufacture in the United States, stating that 'Build in the US, and there are ZERO TARIFFS.' He also asserted that Canada relies heavily on trade with the US, while the reverse is not true.
