Trump Weighs Ethics Compromise Ahead of Crucial Crypto Bill Vote
President Donald Trump met with his advisors on Friday to discuss potential ethics restrictions for a cryptocurrency bill that's set to face a crucial Senate vote next week. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act is aimed at establishing clearer boundaries between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as well as creating federal rules for exchanges, token issuers, and decentralized-finance platforms.
The closed-door discussion focused on language related to the bill that would restrict senior government officials from issuing, promoting or profiting from digital assets while in office. This move is partly aimed at addressing concerns about potential conflicts involving the Trump family's cryptocurrency ventures.
Patrick Witt, a senior White House cryptocurrency adviser, expressed optimism about the negotiations in a recent post on X, suggesting that pessimism about the bill's prospects may be misplaced. The vote represents a potentially important catalyst for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and other digital assets, as well as crypto-linked stocks like Coinbase (COIN).
The emerging Senate proposal would also address stablecoin rewards, anti-money-laundering requirements, decentralized finance, and the regulatory treatment of tokenized securities. A procedural defeat could extend uncertainty and generate short-term volatility across crypto markets.
