Trump's $4 Billion Stablecoin Bank: UAE Power Broker Ties Raise Concerns
A $4 billion stablecoin called USD1 is backed by a bank chartered by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) in August. The bank's ownership structure reveals that an Abu Dhabi entity tied to Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan holds a 49% stake, while a Trump family entity owns 38%. This setup raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest and national security implications.
The OCC set a floor for the bank's capital at $20 million, but USD1's market value has surpassed $4.1 billion, making it the 24th largest crypto asset. The bank needs to maintain around $1 in its own capital for every $205 of USD1 outstanding, which is a significant concern.
The OCC collected passivity commitments from three entities, including Eric Trump and a manager for the Abu Dhabi entity, to ensure they would not interfere with the bank's operations. However, Senator Elizabeth Warren has pressed the Comptroller to delay the charter review until President Trump divests due to national security concerns.
