Trump's Bitcoin Push Fails to Convincingly Sell Americans on Cryptocurrency
A report by the Urban Institute found that despite US President Donald Trump's support for cryptocurrency and easier regulations, many Americans are still hesitant to invest in Bitcoin and other digital currencies.
The survey of over 3,000 adults conducted in January revealed that only 17% have ever owned cryptocurrency, while just 9% currently own it. This means nearly half of those who once invested in crypto have left the market.
This comes at a time when cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have become more accessible through investment products such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and Trump's support helped push Bitcoin's price to record highs in 2025, only for it to crash roughly in half since then. Experts attribute this decline in interest to the volatility and periodic huge declines of cryptocurrency prices.
The Urban Institute recommends that banks, crypto exchanges, and other providers should clearly explain the risks of investing in cryptocurrencies. Some experts also question whether crypto is a good way to diversify a portfolio because Bitcoin often falls when stock markets fall, reducing its value as a safe investment.
