Trump's CFTC Rebuild Could Bring Uncertainty for Crypto
The White House has vetted candidates for the four vacant seats at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), but it is unclear whether a Republican majority will favor crypto. Two of the vacancies belong to Democrats, and while there are no strict party requirements, custom typically dictates that a president's party holds the majority.
The CFTC has been without a full panel since February 2025, when Democratic Chair Rostin Behnam, along with commissioners Kristin Johnson and Christy Goldsmith Romero, left their positions. The remaining seat was held by Republican Summer Mersinger, who dissented on several crypto-related issues during her tenure.
The industry is concerned about the potential shift in power at the CFTC, which has been a key regulatory body for digital assets. While some Republicans have expressed support for crypto, others have been more critical. Caroline Pham, another Republican commissioner, opposed the Uniswap settlement and advocated for supervised testing programs for crypto firms.
The White House's stance on crypto is also unclear, with President Donald Trump's 2025 order instructing agencies to 'win the technology' rather than simply managing risks. This could indicate a more favorable approach towards crypto, but it remains to be seen how this will play out in practice.
