Trump's Crypto Agenda Compromised by Personal Business Interests

The CLARITY Act, a landmark bill aimed at shaping the US crypto market structure, has hit a snag in negotiations due to concerns over ethics language limiting senior officials' profit from digital asset ventures. This comes as President Donald Trump's personal business interests may conflict with the bill's goals.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised to reshape crypto regulation, including removing SEC Chair Gary Gensler and installing more crypto-friendly regulators. He also vowed to support domestic Bitcoin mining and build a government-held Bitcoin stockpile. Since taking office, Trump has delivered on some of these promises, such as Gensler's departure and the creation of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

However, this move may have created an ethics issue for the CLARITY Act. Democrats are pushing for stronger ethics language to prevent senior officials from profiting from digital asset ventures. Senator Elizabeth Warren specifically identified investment exceptions, affiliated-company structures, and DOJ-only enforcement as potential loopholes in the current language.

The bill has already passed the House with a significant margin but still needs bipartisan votes in the Senate. If it passes, it will determine whether the US can turn executive-branch relief into statutory certainty for the crypto industry, similar to what other jurisdictions have achieved.
