Trump's Crypto Bill Hangs on Ethics Agreement
The passage of a cryptocurrency bill in the Senate hinges on whether President Donald Trump's agreement to new ethics rules will be enough to get it across the line.
Trump agreed to bar himself and his wife from issuing meme coins, a type of digital asset that he launched last January as he prepared to return to the White House for a second time.
A measure presented by Sens. Ruben Gallego and Thom Tillis would require Trump to put his crypto holdings in a blind trust and divest when those holdings reach a certain value, as well as allow state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law instead of just the Justice Department.
The proposal has been met with skepticism by some White House officials, who argued that Democratic state lawyers could use it as a political weapon against Trump and other GOP officials.
