Trump's Crypto Coup: Oliver Exposes President's $2.2 Billion Earnings
John Oliver recently criticized Donald Trump's financial dealings on his show Last Week Tonight. Oliver stated that Trump is 'flagrantly corrupt and compromised' due to his substantial earnings from cryptocurrency ventures.
In his first year back in office, Trump's personal income surged to over $2.2 billion, with most of it coming from family crypto businesses. Crypto has become the dominant business interest for the Trump family, surpassing their real estate empire and other ventures.
Oliver analyzed two primary Trump family cryptocurrency projects: meme coins and World Liberty Financial. Meme coins are known to follow pump-and-dump schemes, where they spike in value before crashing. The president's meme coin fell 92% in value, while his wife's dropped 99%. However, Trump reportedly earned $636 million from the project.
Oliver warned that Trump's meme coin is 'just the tip of the iceberg,' and examined World Liberty Financial, a token that grants voting rights to investors. The structure has led to several controversial transactions, including billionaire Justin Sun investing $45 million before being fined $10 million by the SEC for unrelated charges.
Oliver concluded that Trump appears to be exploiting crypto sketchiness for maximum profit, calling it 'flagrantly corrupt and compromised.' He advocated for proper guardrails in crypto regulation.
