Trump's Crypto Divestment Deal Could Save Him Millions Under Clarity Act
A bipartisan ethics proposal in the US Senate would require President Trump to divest from crypto-related businesses, including his family's DeFi platform World Liberty Financial and the TRUMP memecoin. This provision is tied directly to passing the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive federal crypto regulation bill.
The deal could allow Trump to defer capital gains taxes on those sales, potentially saving him millions of dollars. In 2025, he earned $1.4 billion from crypto ventures, with the largest share coming from royalties tied to the TRUMP memecoin through a licensing deal with Celebration Coins.
The Senate must pass the bill before its month-long recess beginning Friday, requiring 60 votes. However, several senators have raised concerns, leaving the bill's passage uncertain. Republican Senator Josh Hawley has said he won't vote for the bill until changes are made around deposit flight concerns.
