Trump's Crypto Empire: John Oliver Exposes $2.2 Billion Earnings
John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight, has accused Donald Trump of being 'flagrantly corrupt and compromised' after investigating the president's substantial earnings from cryptocurrency ventures.
According to financial filings, Trump's personal income surged to more than $2.2 billion in his first year back in office, with most of that coming from family crypto businesses. These projects brought in about $1.4 billion, making crypto the dominant business interest for the Trump family, even surpassing their real estate empire.
Oliver focused on two primary Trump family cryptocurrency projects: meme coins and World Liberty Financial. He noted that meme coins often follow a 'pump-and-dump' scheme trajectory, where value spikes when first released but immediately crashes with insiders selling at the peak.
The president's meme coin surged in price before rapidly declining by 92% in just one year. Trump reportedly earned $636 million from these investments. Oliver warned that this was only 'the tip of the iceberg' and examined World Liberty Financial, which allows investors to acquire governance tokens with voting rights on token operations.
Oliver observed that this structure has led to several controversial transactions, including a $45 million investment by billionaire Justin Sun before he resolved a fraud case against him for $10 million. Oliver concluded that Trump is 'exploiting crypto sketchiness for maximum profit' and criticized his push for the CLARITY Act, which would transfer crypto regulation away from the SEC.
