The push by US President Donald Trump to popularize cryptocurrency has not had the desired effect. According to a recent report by the Urban Institute, only 17% of American adults have ever owned cryptocurrency, and just 9% currently own it.

The study found that nearly half of those who once invested in crypto have left the market. The report comes at a time when cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have become easier for ordinary people to buy through investment products such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Despite Trump's support, which helped push Bitcoin's price to record highs in 2025, the rise in price did not lead to a major increase in new investors. Since reaching those highs, Bitcoin has lost roughly half of its value.
