Trump's Crypto Windfall Complicates Congressional Legislation
President Donald Trump's family has reaped an estimated $1 billion to $1.43 billion in profits from crypto ventures, throwing a wrench into already fragile bipartisan negotiations over the Clarity Act.
The legislation aims to provide regulatory clarity for the industry, but Democrats now want it rewritten with provisions specifically designed to prevent sitting presidents and their families from profiting from digital assets.
Roughly $500 million to $594 million of Trump's crypto income came from World Liberty Financial, a DeFi project launched by his family in 2024, while another $635 million or so came from the $TRUMP meme coin, which has crashed more than 97% from its peak.
The Democratic push for stricter ethics provisions could create a chilling effect on government engagement with digital assets, potentially discouraging the industry's growth.
