Trump's Hormuz Talks Send Oil Prices Plummeting 9%
Oil prices plummeted by nearly 9% on Sunday after US President Donald Trump announced that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would begin on Monday. The price of Brent crude fell from $91.03 to a low of $82.83 before recovering to around $84.06, a 7.66% decline for the day.
Trump claimed that he called off a planned strike on Iran after being asked by several countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Iran itself, to hold back. However, Iran's state media denied ever requesting the attack be called off, with the semi-official Fars news agency calling Trump 'the fool who has run out of steam'.
The uncertainty surrounding the situation has increased market risk and could drive short-term crypto market volatility and shifts of capital across CEXs, DEXs, stablecoins, and DeFi. This may pose downside pressure on token prices and adoption until diplomatic clarity arrives.
