Trump's Iran Strike Cancellation Sends Oil Prices Plummeting
Oil prices plummeted to a three-week low after former President Donald Trump cancelled a planned military strike on Iran. This move reduced geopolitical tensions, decreasing the perceived risk of disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East.
The global crude benchmarks, Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), saw significant drops, with Brent at approximately $82 to $84 a barrel and WTI at $79 to $81 a barrel. These prices represent a decline of around 4% to 6% during the session.
Market participants appear to be reassessing the likelihood of oil reaching new all-time highs in the near future, with some predictions suggesting a reduced chance. According to prediction-market analysis, the odds of crude oil reaching a new high by September 30 have decreased from 5% to 3.9%.
Experts are monitoring US-Iran relations and potential production adjustments from OPEC's Secretary General Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo and Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud. Any further de-escalation or agreements could continue to influence oil prices downward.
