Trump's Tariff Rebuild: Forced Labor Focus Sparks Bitcoin Concerns
The Trump administration's efforts to impose tariffs on imports from various countries have been a contentious issue, and a recent Supreme Court decision has led to a new approach.
In February, the Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) did not give President Trump the authority to impose broad tariffs. However, instead of abandoning the effort, the administration used other sections of federal law to rebuild the tariff system.
The new approach focuses on investigating foreign practices related to forced labor, and imposing duties on imports from countries that fail to prohibit or effectively enforce prohibitions against forced labor. The administration has identified 60 trading partners as targets for investigation, with most receiving a 10% or 12.5% tariff.
The new system is more complex and bureaucratic than its predecessor, but it also creates challenges for Bitcoin investors. The tariffs can contribute to inflation, impact Treasury yields, the dollar, and institutional risk limits, which in turn affect the price of $BTC.
