Two-Block Collision Sparks Small Bitcoin Reorg
On September 11th, Bitcoin experienced another small chain reorganization (reorg) for the third time in four weeks. This event occurred at block height 966500 and was discovered by Galaxy Research via its private node. The anomaly involved two valid blocks that both pointed back to the same parent, one from Spiderpool and the other from Antpool.
Galaxy explained that when this type of situation arises, 'the network ultimately builds on one of those competing blocks, causing the other to be dropped as everyone converges on the chain with the most accumulated work.'
This process is similar to two groups building a tower of blocks and whichever one gains more work becomes the version everyone follows. The competing block is left behind and eventually forgotten.
The depth of reorgs can have significant security implications, especially in deeper chains like those seen on Monero or Bitcoin SV in the past. While small reorgs like this are relatively rare, they do not carry the same security risks as deeper chains.
