U.S. Bank Successfully Tests Cross-Border Stablecoin Transaction on Stellar
U.S. Bank has successfully moved its own stablecoin, USBDC, across borders in a live transaction between entities in North America and Europe. The pilot test, which took place on September 9, utilized the Stellar blockchain network and evaluated several key functions for tokenized assets.
The bank's Digital Asset Platform, internally developed to issue, manage, and transfer tokenized assets while interacting with blockchain networks, facilitated the transaction. The platform enabled minting, payments and redemption, freezing, and clawback capabilities, crucial tools for regulated institutions to respond to fraud, sanctions requirements, legal orders, and operational errors.
The strongest use case for USBDC may not be sending payments slightly faster but rather changing when corporate liquidity can move. Cross-border treasury operations are often constrained by banking hours, settlement windows, and the need to coordinate cash across jurisdictions. Tokenized money creates another option for enhanced liquidity management, collateral mobility, and cross-border treasury operations.
The transaction executed on Stellar extended an existing relationship between U.S. Bank and the Stellar Development Foundation. The bank highlighted near-instant settlement, global reach, and transaction costs below one cent as relevant network characteristics.
