U.S. Government Locks Away Billions in Strategic Bitcoin Reserve
The U.S. government established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve through an executive order on March 6, 2025. However, the reserve is not meant to be a new buying spree, but rather a way for the government to organize and manage its existing Bitcoin holdings.
The reserve is funded with Bitcoin seized by the Treasury Department through asset forfeiture or civil penalties, not new purchases. Once the Bitcoin lands in the reserve, it cannot be sold and must be maintained as a reserve asset of the United States subject to applicable law.
The real significance of the reserve lies in its ability to lock away government-held Bitcoin from circulation, reducing the pool available to everyone else and creating a fixed supply advantage for nations that move early to build a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
