UAE Bans Iranian Vessels Amid Growing Crypto Use in Sanctions Evasion
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ordered all Iranian vessels to leave its ports by August 1, 2026, in a move aimed at enforcing US sanctions against Iran. The ban affects Iranian-flagged ships that were already docked and those seeking to enter UAE ports.
The directive is part of the UAE's efforts to comply with intensifying US sanctions against Iran, which have expanded beyond oil exports to include maritime infrastructure and digital financial networks. Dubai has long served as a critical transit hub for Iranian trade, with the ban effectively severing one of the last reliable physical corridors Iran uses to move goods globally.
The UAE's decision highlights the growing importance of cryptocurrency in sanctions evasion. Iran's crypto ecosystem is valued at over $7.78 billion, with a significant concentration in stablecoin transactions. The Shelbit exchange, based in Dubai, has been linked to a $4 billion sanctions-evasion scheme involving Iranian networks.
