UAE FIU Freezes Assets in Ongoing Money Laundering Investigation
The UAE's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has been making headlines recently with its decision to temporarily freeze assets belonging to Dubai-based businessman Satish Sanpal. This move has sparked widespread discussion about the powers available to the FIU under the country's anti-money laundering (AML) framework.
According to legal experts, freezing assets is a common investigative tool used by authorities to preserve funds while they verify whether suspicious financial activity has occurred. This temporary restriction prevents assets from being transferred, hidden or converted before investigators complete their examination.
The FIU receives suspicious transaction reports from banks, financial institutions, exchange houses, designated non-financial businesses and virtual asset service providers. When intelligence suggests potential financial crime, the FIU can coordinate with competent authorities and order temporary restrictions under the country's AML framework.
