UAE Recognizes Bitcoin as New Economic Sector Amid Oil-Driven Growth

The United Arab Emirates has taken a significant step in embracing cryptocurrency by classifying Bitcoin as a new sector of its economy. This move is seen as a strategic shift for an oil-rich country, which has traditionally relied on black gold for its revenue.

Standard Chartered, the first systemic bank to do so, now offers spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether in the Emirates. The bank's three-tiered offering includes custody, USDC since last July, and now spot execution itself.

However, a murkier turn has been revealed with Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan reportedly holding 49% of WLTC Holdings, the structure overseeing the future crypto bank of the Trump family. This has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest.
