Ubisoft Axes NFT Game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles After Less Than a Year

Ubisoft has announced it will shut down its Web3-enabled game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles on October 30, just over a year after its launch. The game, which allowed players to mint and trade units on the Oasys blockchain marketplace for cash or the OAS cryptocurrency, was plagued by low player numbers despite efforts to revamp it as a free-to-play version called Champions Tactics Reforged.

The reforged version removed the core NFT functionality but still failed to attract an audience, with mixed reviews on Steam. Ubisoft is now attempting to funnel players into its new collectible card game Might and Magic Fates, which launched in early access in February. As part of this effort, high-ranked Champions Tactics players will receive exclusive in-game rewards if they make the switch.

The shutdown comes after Ubisoft announced back in May that it would transition the game away from Web3 functionality due to unspecified changes to the Oasys blockchain infrastructure. Despite this, the company seemed committed to pursuing NFTs for its games, with several titles incorporating the technology despite widespread gamer disdain. The decision to shut down Champions Tactics marks a rare defeat for Ubisoft's NFT efforts.
