UK Banks' Crypto Restrictions Threaten Hub Ambitions
The UK's ambitions to become a global crypto hub may be hindered by its banks' reluctance to provide services to digital asset companies, despite new regulations set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Major UK banks such as HSBC, Nationwide, NatWest, and Monzo have tightened rules around crypto, citing fraud prevention and consumer protection concerns.
The FCA's framework for regulating crypto firms is due to go live on October 25, 2027, but the regulatory body acknowledges that licensed companies still need access to basic banking services.
If banks continue to block digital asset companies from opening bank accounts, it may undermine the effectiveness of regulation and hinder the growth of the UK's crypto industry.
