UK Crypto Industry Threatened by Bank Restrictions
Major UK banks have imposed stricter rules on crypto transactions to prevent fraud and protect consumers. Banks such as HSBC, Nationwide, NatWest, and Monzo have tightened their requirements for crypto accounts, causing concerns that licensed crypto firms may struggle to access bank accounts.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has set strict standards for crypto firms, which will come into effect in October 2027. However, lawmakers are warning that without reliable bank access, the framework may fail to support crypto adoption, fundraising, and market development in centralized exchanges (CEXs), decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.
According to the Financial Times, UK lawmakers believe that restrictions on crypto activity by banks could hinder the country's digital asset industry. The FCA's framework aims to bring crypto firms fully into the regulatory system, but if licensed firms cannot access bank accounts, it may be difficult for them to operate effectively.
