UK Crypto Investors' £717M Surplus
HMRC has released its first crypto-specific tax figures, showing that 17,600 UK taxpayers reported £1.38 billion of capital gains in the 2024-2025 tax year.
However, a significant portion of these gains came from a small group of investors: just 240 people accounted for more than half of all declared gains, totaling £717 million.
The figures are based on data collected through Self Assessment returns and do not reflect the total amount of crypto activity in the UK, as they only capture reported capital gains tax-liable disposals.
HMRC is building a second data trail by implementing the OECD's Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF), which will provide the agency with a separate dataset alongside taxpayers' declarations starting from 2027.
