UK FCA Seeks Public Feedback on Crypto Regulation Ahead of 2027 Deadline
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has opened a public consultation on how digital asset activities will be defined under its forthcoming regulatory regime. The consultation is part of the regulator's broader crypto roadmap, which targets full implementation in October 2027.
The FCA is seeking feedback from firms, individuals, industry groups, policymakers, and academics on various aspects of crypto regulation, including stablecoin issuance, trading platforms, custody, and staking. The consultation aims to provide a more structured and predictable process for companies operating in the sector.
Industry experts are divided over the pace of the regulatory development. Thomas Cattee, white-collar crime partner at Gherson Solicitors LLP, described the UK's approach as slow compared to other European jurisdictions. On the other hand, Nick Jones, founder of payments platform Zumo, views the FCA's roadmap as a step forward and necessary for building compliant infrastructure.
