UK Investor Recovers $4.5M in Lost Bitcoin from Defunct Exchange Collapse
A UK investor has recovered over $4.5 million in Bitcoin that was lost after a now-defunct exchange collapsed nearly 13 years ago.
The individual, known only as Chris due to privacy concerns, initially purchased Bitcoin worth approximately £1,500 (about $2,000 at the time) from Britcoin in December 2011.
At the time, Britcoin was one of the first UK-based cryptocurrency exchanges and later rebranded as Intersango. The exchange ceased operations by early 2014, leaving Chris unable to retrieve his digital assets or access his account.
Crisis hit when Bitcoin's price skyrocketed, making Chris realize what he had lost could have meant a lot for his family.
After enlisting CEL Solicitors and The Crypto Tracing Experts, the team identified a wallet containing over 5,500 BTC linked to former Intersango customers, worth about $421 million.
