UK Party Reform's Crypto Ambitions Spark Warning of Economic Consequences
Reform UK, a British political party, has received two massive donations from cryptocurrency billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. The £36 million each donation represents nearly double the amount raised by Labour and the Conservatives combined this year.
The donors' fortunes are tied to their involvement in the crypto industry. Delo co-founded BitMEX, a platform that allows users to trade crypto futures, while Harborne holds a 12% stake in Tether, a stablecoin valued at over $200 billion.
Economists warn that if Reform UK's proposed policies on cryptocurrency are implemented, they could lead to tax rises and public spending cuts by pushing up the cost of government borrowing. Higher interest rates may also result, negatively impacting mortgage payers and small businesses.
