UK Police Seize £1.03 Million Linked to Darknet Markets
Avon and Somerset Police in the UK have recovered £1,032,487.86 (approximately $1.4 million) from darknet market activities between 2016 and 2019. The funds were traced to several unnamed darknet markets and consisted of 20.21 BTC, other cryptoassets, and bank funds.
The police force's Financial Investigation Unit used specialist tracing methods in collaboration with the cyber team to follow the assets through blockchain records. These records exposed the movement of Bitcoin between addresses, allowing investigators to identify links between wallets and suspected criminal activity.
According to Detective Constable Anthony Davis, 'the blockchain stores a permanent record of transactions' that can be an invaluable source of evidence. Specialist financial investigation skills have become increasingly important for locating and recovering criminal assets held in cryptocurrencies.
