UK Stablecoin Rules to Guide Future Regulation, FCA Says Cross-Border Payments Key Use Case
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has found that stablecoins have their strongest role in cross-border payments, according to its March Stablecoin Sprint. The event saw about 75 participants examine retail payments, remittances, and international transfers over two days.
The FCA also gathered input from around 30 attendees at a May trade finance roundtable. Cross-border payments were identified as the strongest current use case for stablecoins, particularly when compared to other applications such as retail payments.
However, UK consumers showed limited interest in replacing existing payment methods with stablecoins. Nevertheless, the FCA indicated that forthcoming stablecoin rules will guide future payment regulation and could boost adoption and market clarity for crypto cross-border payments.
