UK Tokenization Roadmap Gains Momentum with Regulatory Framework
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Bank of England have made significant progress in developing a joint tokenization roadmap after receiving 123 responses to their Call for Input on tokenized securities issued in May. The regulatory framework aims to accelerate efforts, develop a clear timeline, and shift from pilot projects to wholesale-market infrastructure.
The survey found that post-trade activity presented the greatest opportunity for tokenization, enabling lower costs through faster collateral movement and settlement. This trend is expected to benefit banks, investment firms, asset managers, trading platforms, and providers of financial market infrastructure.
The management of collateral became a key concern during the consultations, as tokenized collateral may become more easily transferred between counterparties, increasing velocity and contributing to an effective margin process. Tokenized money-market funds can potentially serve as collateral without liquidation, but this requires regulatory development.
