Ukraine Tops Global Crypto Adoption Per Capita
Ukraine leads the world in cryptocurrency adoption per capita, according to Chainalysis' Global Crypto Adoption Index. The country ranks eighth globally when considering the raw numbers of transactions linked to it, but first when adjusting for population and purchasing power.
The estimated $206.3 billion in crypto-related transactions over the past year represents a 52% increase from the previous period. Ukraine's National Securities and Stock Market Commission (NSSMC) notes that this growth has settled the question of whether cryptocurrencies are a niche phenomenon, leaving instead the issue of how they are regulated.
NSSMC head Oleksiy Semenyuk states that when a country ranks first in crypto activity per capita, 'we can no longer talk about virtual assets as a niche phenomenon.' He highlights the need for clear legislation to address issues such as taxation and user protection. However, Ukraine's parliament approved a virtual assets law in September 2021, and the finance ministry has yet to complete the licensing and tax framework.
The war in Ukraine has significantly contributed to this growth, with households and volunteer fundraisers turning to cryptocurrencies as an emergency workaround. Semenyuk also emphasizes the potential for tokenization of real and financial assets to open new routes for capital raising, particularly for a country relying heavily on its domestic bond market for war financing.
