Unicoin Sues Uniswap Over UNI Trademark, Arguing It's Generic
Unicoin Inc., formerly TransparentBusiness, has filed a lawsuit against Uniswap Labs in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The complaint seeks to cancel Uniswap's UNI trademark registration and declares non-infringement alongside cancellation.
The argument put forward by Unicoin is that UNI is a Latin prefix meaning 'one' and that it is already used in over 3,600 USPTO registrations, with roughly a thousand of them live. The company also notes that at least three unrelated tokens trade under the exact ticker on CoinGecko.
Uniswap, led by CEO Hayden Adams, had initially accused Unicoin of infringement and demanded cessation of UNI-related branding. However, Unicoin declined to comply with these demands and instead filed a complaint in federal court.
The case is set to be heard by the U.S. District Court in Southern New York, which will also consider Unicoin's request for a jury trial and legal-fee award.
