Unicoin Sues Uniswap Over UNI Trademark, Citing Generic Term
Unicoin has filed a lawsuit against Uniswap Labs in New York federal court over the UNI trademark. The dispute centers around Unicoin's claim that the term 'uni' is too common and should not be registered as a unique trademark.
According to Unicoin, there are over 3,600 US trademark registrations containing the prefix 'UNI', making it difficult to distinguish their brand from others. The company argues that 'uni' is generic or descriptive and does not identify Uniswap as a single source.
The lawsuit follows months of demands from Uniswap for Unicoin to stop using its UNICOIN branding, websites, and cryptocurrency use. Unicoin rejected these demands, stating it had independently used the name since 2021.
Unicoin is seeking declarations on trademark infringement, dilution, cybersquatting, and unfair competition, as well as legal costs. This adds to Uniswap's growing list of legal disputes, including a recent SEC lawsuit over its cryptocurrency offerings in 2025.
