UniCredit Stock Rises Amid Crypto Custody Plans and Commerzbank Takeover
UniCredit's stock price rose by 1.63% to EUR 85.17 on September 11, 2026, as investors showed interest in the Italian lender's evolving strategy. The bank is planning to build infrastructure for digital asset custody and trading, including support for tokenized investment products and stablecoin-based fixed-income securities.
The move builds on internal work that has now shifted to external partnership talks. UniCredit is among Europe's large lenders exploring regulated crypto services as part of their capital markets offering. This adds a potential new fee and commission stream on top of the traditional lending and payments business, but it also introduces regulatory and operational risks linked to digital asset volatility.
The bank's push to take full control of Commerzbank, Germany's second-largest listed bank, is another major strategic driver for UniCredit stock. A combined UniCredit-Commerzbank group would hold more than EUR 1.3 trillion in assets across Italy and Germany, significantly enlarging UniCredit's balance sheet and exposure to Europe's core economies.
