Uniswap Burns Record $590K Worth of UNI Tokens Daily
Uniswap's daily token burn hit an all-time high on August 21, exceeding $590K in value. Approximately 150,000 UNI tokens were permanently removed from circulation, surpassing previous records set on June 5 and July 30. The milestone is attributed to the protocol's fee switch, which routes a portion of trading fees into smart contracts that automatically buy and burn UNI.
The fee switch was activated in December 2022 as part of the broader UNIfication proposal, which also included a one-time burn of 100 million UNI from the protocol's treasury. The extension of the fee switch to more pool types and the inclusion of creator fees in the burn mechanism suggest that Uniswap is expanding its system.
Annualized burn rates have climbed to upwards of 16.5 million UNI in recent 30-day rolling periods, indicating a significant deflationary pressure on the token's supply dynamics. While the risk exists that trading volumes may be cyclical and affect fee generation, Uniswap's efforts to expand its burn mechanism could maintain or increase future daily records.
The shift from a governance token to a deflationary asset has been ongoing since the implementation of the fee switch. With more trading volume generating more fees, which buys and burns more UNI, the protocol is reducing supply and increasing demand for the token.
