Unstoppable Domains Abandons ICANN Integration Plans Amid Restrictions
Unstoppable Domains' pivot away from integrating blockchain-based domains into the traditional internet's domain name system (DNS) has left thousands of customers in limbo. The company announced it would not file applications for its Web3 top-level domains, including .crypto and .nft, in ICANN's 2026 expansion round.
This decision follows a recent ICANN report proposing sweeping restrictions on blockchain-based domain ownership, which would have required re-registration of existing names within the standard DNS framework, annual renewal fees, and disclosure of registrant information. Unstoppable Domains' founder Matthew Gould cited financial losses associated with the ICANN application process as a key factor in this decision.
The affected domains still function within the blockchain ecosystem, resolving to wallet addresses and decentralized websites through compatible browsers and extensions. Refunds are available for customers who purchased domains on or after March 5, 2025, but those who bought names years ago may not be eligible.
